about
the artist
During
his teens and into his twenties, Matt experimented with creating unique
sound by blending different audio clips, essentially mixing them to
create music. His interests then turned to painting with oil, most of
Matt's oil work pulls color from the earth, using different color but
pulling from the same earth tone. In some of his works Matt incorporates
an original method of moving oil around on the canvas using compressed
air and a special nozzle. Around the same time, Matt became very interested
in nature photography, capturing memorable landscapes and vivid close-ups
of many creatures and plants.
Matt
graduated from the University of Kansas in 1993 with a degree from the
college of Liberal Arts. He moved to Portland Oregon in 1995 and has
lived there since. He continues to participate in photography, oil painting
and music but his medium of choice is metal. He creates functional art
and unique sculpture with an industrial style. Matt uses patinas to
"naturally" paint or oxidize the surface of the metal, leaving
the real texture and look to the piece. Matt's current work is a mixture
of all his creative endeavors, using all of his experiences to create
art with an earthy yet industrial feel.
